When I opened the box I was pleasantly surprised. I have reviewed a rather large number of compact LED-RGB camera lights over the past two years. And typically the markings, buttons and ‘mode’ switching had to be learned because all the controls were molded black-on-black plastic. I usually use white paint to ‘tip off’ the rasied or ‘infill’ the recessed text/labeling just so I could read it. The Photoolex light doesn’t require any fixes to its controls or labeling. Everything is large, easy to read markings. And the control knobs are made of large round knurled metal. Even the cold shoe adapter components are metal. It was as though this light had been originally designed to meet military specifications. And I saw that as one of its best features; easy to identify controls and easy to operate.

After opening the box, I immediately charged the light head. There’s a USB-C port for that. It came at about 75% charged, so it reached 100% rather quickly. And without referring to the user’s manual, a small multifold with clear and understandable text and illustrations, I was going into each of the three light functions; CCT (light temp’ and brightness control), HIS (spectrum of RGB colors) and SPECIAL EFFECTS lighting. It took very little time to learn this light.
